A MALVERN doctor is travelling to Scotland this week to protest against plans for a new generation of nuclear weapons.
Dr Trevor Trueman, aged 57, of Westminster Road, says he expects to be arrested during the process at the Faslane submarine base in Scotland.
Dr Trueman was expecting to join health professionals from all over the UK in the protest about plans to replace Trident missiles with newer nuclear weapons.
He said: "The proposed replacement of Trident, when we have ratified a non-proliferation Treaty and are encouraging other countries to remain non-nuclear, is the height of hypocrisy. Nuclear weapons are indiscriminate and therefore illegal under international law.
"There is no valid case to be made for Britain retaining a nuclear deterrent. Replacement is a dangerous waste of valuable resources and tax-payers' money. I am proud to partake in the blockade and expect to be arrested."
As well as picketing outside the base, Dr Trueman and fellow protesters will be holding informal clinics at a Glasgow shopping centre, The protests are due to be carried out on Thursday and Friday.
Trueman has made three trips to Sudan and Ethiopia, and says the money allocated for nuclear weapons would be better spent on health care in developing countries. On his last trip, he helped train 238 vaccinators and managed a campaign to vaccinate 120,000 people against meningitis.
Although Dr Trueman retired from full-time general practice in 1994, he still practices part-time at the surgery in Colwall.
