IPPNW South Asia statement on terrorist violence in Pahalgam, Kashmir

The South Asian affiliates of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) express heartfelt condolences with the families of the deceased in the terrorist attack in Pahalgam in Kashmir. Such heinous act is highly condemnable and deserves stringent punishment to the perpetrators of the act. Killing of innocent people is against all forms of ethics and values for the human lives. Such situations help the communal, divisive and war mongering forces. There is already rise of fundamentalism in Bangladesh, India and Pakistan which is adversely affecting peace, harmony and development. Increasing rhetoric by the higherups in India and Pakistan is a cause of grave concern. We appeal to the powers to not let the situation escalate into war which will be detrimental to the lives of not only soldiers but also common people. In case of escalation threat of use of nuclear weapons can not be ruled out. That the people of Kashmir overwhelmingly protested against the terrorist act is ray of hope for thaw in the situation. The South Asian countries should evolve a common security system to check any such happenings in future.
