– promises to keep!

In the year since it was passed at the United Nations, 59 states have signed and 12 have ratified the Treaty to Prohibit Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). Once 50 ratifications are reached, the treaty will enter into force. “Even before the Treaty enters into force, responsible financial institutions are taking note,” said IPPNW’s Dr. Tilman Ruff in the Australian Institute of International Affairs.   “Since the treaty’s adoption, the Norwegian Pension Fund, the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund with assets over US$1 trillion, the largest Dutch pension fund ABP, Deutsche Bank, and major Belgian bank KBC have announced that they will exclude from their investments companies that produce nuclear weapons.”

In another piece on the TPNW anniversary in The Nation, “How prohibiting nuclear weapons changed the world,” Ray Acheson, the director of Reaching Critical Will, the disarmament program of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, details  a litany of other positive results, from national conversations on relationships to nuclear weapons to worldwide civil society activism demanding abolition. “The rate of ratification is currently faster for the TPNW than any other multilateral WMD treaty,” she notes.

Still, we have “miles to go before we sleep,” cautions Dr. Ruff.
